I love finding ways to pray with young children. This works from the age where a child can point and works well for any age above that! All you need to do is build two different things with Duplo blocks. Build the kinds of things your child is interested in, it could be trains or buildings, whatever! Chat as you build with your child and give each item a name of a blessing that is good for everyone. Such as the House of Joy or the Train of Peace.
Next, get some people or animals and name them after people you’d like to bless and ask your child where to place that person. For example, “this is granny, does she need to go into the house of joy or on the train of peace? Where ever you place the person, say a simple one-line prayer like, “God, as we put granny on the train, we ask you to give her peace.
You might want to let the people you’ve prayed for know that you’ve done so. I often find they had a need that correlated with what we prayed for them.
This activity would also work wonderfully as part of a Creche or Toddler group, or even a church service, making it possible for everyone to join in a time of prayer even if they cannot speak.
I’ve found this simple activity is a great way to bring prayer into their play and their lives, and it doesn’t need to last long.
